It is quite essential to know why one needs to keep a fire extinguisher in his or her home. A lot of folks have not taken fire safety into great consideration, even though they know that a lot of people have lost homes and even their lives because of the unexpected fires that occurred near or in their homes. Most people think that just because they have access to water, they will not have any problems extinguishing the fires that may occur in their homes, workplace or community. Having the right kind of fire safety equipment is extremely crucial to a workplace full of computers or electrical equipment, because electrocution is a very dangerous thing.
There are also special fires extinguishing equipment designed specifically for hazardous wastes or highly flammable metals. Although a bucket full of dry sand is also good when it comes to stopping the fires from blazing, it is much better to have a Class D fire extinguisher near your reach. Not only are they easier to control, but they are also easier to store because they are not messy and is very efficient when it comes to stopping fire.
Another cause for alarm is the fact that even though it is required by the law to have a fire extinguisher or a fire hose inside or near a laboratory where flammable chemicals are stored and used, very few comply with such conditions. This does not only happen in the workplace, but also happens quite often in schools and campuses, where there are more people in danger of getting hurt. If you are a student, and there is no fire extinguishing equipment in your school laboratory, make sure to contact your school administrator and express your concerns clearly. If there is no action after you have shown the problem, then it is better to contact an education department, especially if there are smaller kids in your school.
Remember that not all fires are the same, and while others can be stopped with a sprinkle of water, others may be the result of unbalanced combinations of flammable chemicals, thus are more complicated to extinguish. It is quite important to make sure that a laboratory fire extinguisher has ABC rates on them, so that they can fight the most complicated of fires. Make sure that you know how to operate the fire extinguisher because it is not advisable to mess with them as the wrong usage of fire extinguishers often lead to more harm than safety.
If you have a fire hose in your school make sure that you have been well informed about them, and taught well how to use them properly. The pressure of the water coming from the fire hose should also be stronger than the normal water hose, because stronger pressure leads to easier fire reduction.
