This exotic gemstone has the most dramatic red color as compared to all gemstones and it is celebrated for its passionate color.

The name ruby has been derived from the Latin word ‘ruber’ meaning ‘red’. Ruby’s history in folklore is as passionate as its color. According to some ancient legends ruby was considered to be a radiant or glowing gemstone. In the religious books of Hindu religion, enormous rubies and emeralds are said to be used to light-up the palace of God. An emperor of China in ancient times used a ruby to light-up his room. Amongst other beliefs associated to ruby, one of the most interesting is of Burmese warriors who inserted genuine rubies beneath their skin with a belief that it would protect them from being wounded in battle.

Where are rubies found
Traditionally, India was believed to be the source of finest rubies. However, Burma is the most popular source of finest rubies in the world. The rubies from Burma are celebrated for their fully saturated intense and lively red color. The color the Burmese ruby can be described as ‘pigeon-blood-red', but the term 'Burmese color' is a more apt description.

Treatment
Rubies are rarely found perfect or with excellent clarity in nature. These gemstones are heat-treated to intensify or lighten their color or improve their clarity. Heat enhancement for gemstones is a permanent, stable process and an accepted norm in the jewelry industry.
Tips for buying your gemstone

While buying a gemstone the first and the most important thing to be considered is its color. As a general rule for all gemstones, more vivid the color, more valuable the gem. Rubies from Burma generally command the highest prices.

Gemstone care

Ruby jewellery can be cleaned using warm water with mild detergent. An old tooth brush should be used to remove dirt and grease, or use a soft cloth damped in warm water. Cleaning agents containing chlorine or harsh chemicals, or petroleum products must be avoided.
