Most of us have responsibilities towards other people in our lives. We might have a husband, a wife, a partner, or perhaps children that we need to look after on a daily basis. It’s normal to want to nurture our relationships, but many of us don’t put in enough thought to the long term practical requirements of such a connection.

Protecting yourself and your family in financial terms is an important step to take, but it’s one that many of us don’t like to think about. This is because it involves looking at the worst case scenarios that can happen in life. But planning for these events is rather like buying fire extinguishers – the chances are you will never need them, but you feel safer knowing they are in place should the need arise.

A good place to start is with your job. Many positions have a benefits package attached to them which provides certain perks, such as health insurance, if something happens while you are in that employment. Check whether any cover provides for your family as well as yourself. You might find this saves you money, as you can take advantage of any free cover you and your partner enjoy with your jobs that saves you having to buy it elsewhere.

The most important thing to buy if you have dependents is life insurance. It’s not an easy thing to think about, but you want to be sure that in the event of your death your family will be well looked after. Having financial difficulties is not pleasant at any time of life, but when you have just lost a loved one then money worries should be the last thing you need to tackle. If you make adequate provisions ahead of time, you know that should the worst happen your mortgage will be paid in full, and your family won’t face any financial hardship.

Make sure you shop around before settling for a policy. Different companies will offer different amounts of cover for varying amounts, so read the small print carefully before you choose. A cheaper policy isn’t necessarily a bargain, especially if the cover it provides turns out to be inadequate.

Taking on this kind of financial planning isn’t anyone’s idea of having fun, but when you get down to it you’ll find that it doesn’t take very long at all to put your affairs in order. Once everything is arranged you will be able to get on with life, knowing you and your loved ones are fully protected.

One final point to remember – make sure you keep all the relevant documents in a safe place, and let key people know where they are. Ideally you should keep them in a fireproof safe, but any secure place tucked away with other important documents will suffice.
