In recent years, British people have been forced to endure some disasters; not least of all flooding in England and Wales. Such flooding has seen hundreds of thousands of people without homes or access to basic infrastructure and services.

No one can say exactly why the natural flooding in the UK is happening more frequently, or why it is becoming more severe. Some people blame global warming for raising the sea levels, others blame the over-population of the country. Whatever the reason, the risk of being affected by flooding in the UK is on the rise.

Making sure your home is protected against flooding is now a necessity in the UK today, and there are a few things you can do to help protect your home and possessions in the event of a flood.

An important step to consider is keeping all of your important documents and photographs on the top floor of your home, and stored in zip-locked, waterproof bags. If you have other important possessions that are irreplaceable, think about permanently keeping them on display on the top floor of your home. This means you won’t have to remember to move them if the flood water is suddenly at your front door.

If you are advised by the Environment Agency to evacuate your home, follow their instructions. It is better to get your family and most treasured possessions to safe ground, rather than risk being stranded. Just in case there is not enough time to get to safe ground, keep supplies of bottled water and canned food as high up in your home as possible.

Another preventative measure to take is to sign up for flood warnings. The Environment Agency and many local governments are able to give you a call or send you a text message if there is a risk to your home. These organisations will also be able to give you specific information on how to best prepare for a flood in your area.

It is also advisable to take out home insurance in the UK which has flood cover as part of the policy. This is another good way to protect your home as home insurance will give you peace of mind and the knowledge that your home and possessions will be covered if the flood damages them. If your current home insurance policy doesn’t include cover for flooding, enquire about having it added – just in case.

Natural flooding in the UK will possibly continue to affect the British people for some time yet. However, you can help ease the effect on your home by following these simple preventative steps.
