A road traffic accident can be a very unpleasant experience, I don’t think I need to tell you that. The sad fact is that you are bound to experience at least one traffic accident in your lifetime. At least that’s what the numbers say. The good thing is that the big chances are that you’ll suffer minor if any injuries at all.
Anyway, I also have to mention another fact: respecting the basic rules of safe driving will drastically diminish your chances of going through an accident. If it’s that simple, it makes you wonder why many drivers don’t do that. Well, it may come as a surprise for you, but approximately 90% of all the accidents happen out of some sort of human error. In fact, by the year 2020, road accidents will have claimed the number one position in a top of preventable death causes.
Although each accident situation is different, there are certainly a few basic patterns that often enough lead to disaster. Read carefully what I am about to tell you next and try to avoid any of these situations. Haven’t you ever encountered a man who said “Well, I’ve been driving for 40 years now and never have I been involved in an accident”? Some might say it’s a question of good luck. Yes, that may also be true, but only partially. And as I am a person who thinks that you make your own luck, it’s only safe to assume that those lucky persons always tried to respect the common sense driving rules. And I’m not actually assuming this, because my fellow said “Well. I’ve been driving for 40 years and never had an accident. That’s because I always tried to drive safe and never got in the car drunk”. That’s a sample of elderly wisdom we have right there. And now here are the most commonly encountered accident causes:
DISTRACTED DRIVERS
Don’t let your mind stray away from the road ahead too much. Because the road ahead is the thing you should really be concentrating on. You have no idea how many accidents happen because of distractions like: talking on the cell phone while driving, eating in the car, trying to pick up dropped objects. Also, be careful when you talk to the other passengers. I’m not saying you shouldn’t talk to them, that’s a little bit too much. I’m just saying that you should never lose your focus from the road ahead. And in the situation that you have your pet with you in the car, try not to groom him, even if it may seem irresistible.
IMPAIRED DRIVERS
That’s what personally infuriates me the most. Why should I or anybody else be in jeopardy because someone else couldn’t resist the temptation of alcohol or drugs? They can even be excluded from the accident category, that’s how preventable they are. If you really want to know, one out of seven road deaths is caused by drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol. That, worldwide, translates into hundreds of thousand of lives which could have been saved. ANNUALY.
SPEEDING DRIVERS
Over-speeding is another lead cause for accidents. Every driver should know his/her speed limit, in which his/her brain is able to process the pieces of information it gets from the outside environment. And this limit can vary according to the outside conditions. For example, if it’s foggy outside, it’s only logical that you won’t afford to go with the speed that you’re going with when it’s clear. Or, in dense traffic, you won’t be able to go as fast as when you have a clear road ahead.
Beside these three main causes for accidents, there are a few which can’t be controlled by the driver. I am talking about the road conditions and maintenance here. If it rains, you will probably have a slippery road surface ahead of you. If it snows, even more so. Bad road maintenance makes the driver even more powerless, as road flaws like holes are very hard to observe.
And there you have it, the most lethal accident causes. And they are not things to be taken lightly, they are things which should really make you reconsider your driving ways, if this should be the case. But this is only if you want to considerably minimize your chances of going through a road traffic accident.
