Concerned by the fact that people could die if the mattress they were sleeping on catches fire, the government of California passed a law on January 1, 2005 in California that all mattresses sold will have to be flame proof. This became a national law and came to followed all over the country since July 1, 2007 onwards. The law mandates that all consumer mattresses sold after July 1, 2007 is fire-proof. Though on paper it sounds like a good idea to comply with it manufacturers have to use harsh and toxic chemicals.

In spite of the fact that the fatality risk from a mattress fire is extremely small with only about 1 in 1 million chance. The government has its bit by passing the law keeping the safety of its citizens in mind, it has however seemed to overlook the fact that to make mattresses safe and flame proof they have in all cases to be treated with harsh chemicals that impart flame retardant properties to the mattress. Some of these chemicals are extremely dangerous with potential for causing serious health hazards to humans. Using these mattresses for a long time can pose certain serious health risks such as a serious risk of cancer. Short term effects are symptoms such as itchiness, rashes, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, hyperventilation, shortness of breath, dizziness, among other allergy like symptoms.

Most of the time babies are exposed to sub-lethal doses of toxic gases in their cots. Hence no harmful results can be observed immediately, however over a long period the effects do become apparent. Occasionally, however, all the above circumstances do co-exist and a SIDS death ensues. The recent statistics reveal that over 3,000 new infants succumb to SIDS every year in America alone. This means every night 9 infants are taken from their loving families by this silent killer.


As of now the only way to obtain flame proof mattresses is through a Doctors prescription. There is only one mattress manufacturer who can still make these flame proof mattresses, and that is Strobel Technologies.
