When you choose to be a nurse you know right from the beginning that there are so many different types of employment opportunities out there that you will never be without a job. As a nurse you can choose to work in a hospital, as a midwife, in a nursing home, as a travel nurse and the list can go on and on. Further more, within these different nursing employment fields there is a further breakdown of different job opportunities and this makes your decision harder but your opportunity range wider.

The USA has been experiencing a nursing shortage for several years now and this is why many Canadians are choosing to work in the USA as they are more likely to get employed here than in Canada where there are too many nurses and not enough hospitals. The benefits of this nursing shortage for newly graduated nurses is that you have more opportunity to choose the position you want, where if hospitals were full you would be lucky to get a job at all, let alone the position you actually want.

Many nurses are choosing to not only have one employment route in their career field but to choose several different avenues they can benefit from. Nurses are beginning to combine their hospital working skills with midwifery and even different jobs on different days to expand their experience at a faster rate. Many times nurses work 3-4 12hour shifts per week which leaves some days open for other nursing opportunities such as nursing homes or midwifery and they are taking advantage of this opportunity.

The employment world of nursing is incredibly competitive because there are so many nurses graduating at the same time and trying to find the job of their dreams. You can no longer simply walk into a hospital and get the job in the Emergency Room or in Neonatal care; these positions are given to those nurses with seniority. Today more and more nurses are realizing there are more opportunities outside the hospital setting as well and they are taking their skills where they are needed.

When you graduate and are ready to enter the field of nursing, take the time to see all the different employment opportunities at your fingertips because there are so many to choose from it does not pay to make a rash decision. Nursing is a very specialized job and you should be proud of your accomplishments and therefore take the time to use them wisely.
