Isolate new plants from your existing houseplants and keep an eye out for signs of insects and diseases. If you don't notice any problems after two weeks you're in the clear to move the new plants to their permanent locations. This is a super easy way to prevent spreading problems to your healthy plants.
Remove 1/4 inch of topsoil and replace with sand. Fungus gnats prefer moist soil with a lot of organic matter and will avoid plants top dressed with sand.
Fill the bottle with the vinegar (1/2 cup), sugar (1/2 cup), and enough water to fill the bottle half full. You can stir the liquid mixture around to mix the sugar in. Don't fill the bottle to full, or the gnats will be able to escape. The liquid should not be touching the opening of the bottle.
To get rid of real gnats, fungus gnats, make sure you regulate the watering of your plants. Over watered plants can invite fungus gnats to breed in what has become a good medium for the larvae. Also, try to keep as much decomposing organic material out of your potted plants, because the decomposing materials are what the fungus gnats thrive on. Making sure plant soil is dry and decomposing matter is regulated properly should get rid of those gnats.
You can also get rid of gnats by using products found around the home. Since they are attracted to the scent of vinegar, fill a jar with vinegar and poke holes in the lid. The gnats will climb into the jar, but they won't be able to climb out. For those that remain in the house, try putting vegetable oil around your kitchen sink drain. Gnats finding themselves coated in the oil will be unable to breed. If you're not interested in potentially clogging your drain with vegetable oil, pouring a cup of ammonia down your kitchen sink is said to get rid of any flies hovering around that area. Let it sit for a couple of hours before using the sink again.
Easy way to do this, something that hit me while making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I just took the knife, with residual jelly and peanut butter from my sandwich and put it blade down into a pint glass and set it in the sink. I came back to it a couple hours later and gnats were everywhere, then I just went John Wayne with the sprayer faucet. I think the toll inside the glass alone was about thirty with god knows how many from the sink alone. Very low tech, but it seems to do the job.
Nuke Them. This is a good choice if you just have a few that wander in from outdoors. Just about any flying insect spray will kill them and very quickly. If the situation becomes an infestation, a fogger might be a better way to get the job done. If you use a spray and have pets make sure that you check the labels, and follow all directions for safe use. A less caustic approach would be to use insecticidal soap sprays.
Locate breeding grounds. Gnats breed in many of the same environments as mosquitoes (they both belong to the Diptera family). Eliminate standing water and decomposing plant matter to rob them of their favorite love-nests. Even if you live in wetlands or on a lake, you can help keep down the gnat population in or around your home by emptying stagnant fountains or bird baths, cleaning out gutters, tire swings and anywhere else that tends to get swampy or collect rainwater. Be sure not to over water plants! Constantly-damp soil is a perfect haven for larvae.
