Spot Removal in Carpets

It is so much easier to clean today's carpet because it is very resistant to stains. If attended to promptly, spots on carpet can be treated in no time. If spills are ignored and allowed to soak in, they can become much more difficult to remove. In fact, leaving spots can cause them to become permanent. Even stain resistant carpets can be permanently marked if stains are allowed to set. When you spill something on your carpet, quickly use a cloth to absorb the spill. A clean dry cloth should be used to blot the stain. Rubbing will spread the liquid around the carpet and possibly make the problem worse. First blot the edges to keep the stain from spreading then continue to blot the liquid until it is removed from the carpet.
Food and other dry particles can be vacuumed or picked up. Never use anything on your carpet that could damage its delicate fibers, such as brushes for hard scrubbing. For help in removing stains, prior treatment of the spot or stain in your carpet with a pre-treater is a smart thing to do. There are many cleaning products that will help remove the spot from your carpet. Always read the instructions on the back of the cleaner and follow them very carefully. To use the cleaner, gently work it into the carpet using a blotting method. Do this repeatedly until you see the stain has disappeared. If the stain is heavily soiled or set into the carpet, it may take several tries to remove the stain. Never use more carpet cleaning solution than what the instructions call for when removing stains from your carpet. Make sure you follow the instructions.
If there is no carpet cleaning solution on hand, you can make your own! Before you try anything else, try plain water on the spot. Water may be all that is necessary if the spot is not set in. If that fails, attempt to remove the stain once more by using a tiny quantity of clear dish detergent with warm water. This often proves to be successful. Be careful not to use a detergent that contains bleach. A solution of white vinegar and water can be used to remove stains on your carpet; however, it is best to test this on a small carpet remnant before trying the solution on your floor. This insures that there won't be any discoloration on your carpet.
Rugs and carpets, stained by pets, can be difficult to restore to their original state. Many among us are pet owners and, as such, we are faced with stains often. Pet stains need to be removed quickly, so try spot cleaning them as soon as you notice them. A stain may set in and be harder to remove if left on the floor for a long period of time. It might also create an offensive smell in your home.
