The first thing most people do when they connect to the net is open an e-mail account. The second thing they do is take a quick look around, which is called surfing. If you are thinking about making money online you will probably click on a few business opportunity sites. This small action will open a floodgate of mail from sophisticated vendors poised like vultures just outside your monitor screen. The seasoned veterans have honed their marketing skills to the point where they could sell oil to Arabs and ice to Eskimos.

Some people are born with a healthy dose of skepticism, which will serve them well at this stage. The rest of us average Joe's will find the allure of instant wealth and success irresistible and open ourselves, and our wallets, to a few self-styled “gurus”. Below I have listed a few tips to help the uninitiated cope with these charmers.

1) Don't spend any money at first. Period. If a program is worth purchasing today it will be worth purchasing tomorrow. Words like "secret" or "guru" in any sales pitch should set off alarm bells. There are no secrets. Changes do occur in markets, but not overnight. Search engine algorithms or e-mail filters do change frequently but a value today still a value tomorrow. Value online, like a good pair of wingtips or boots, lasts a long time.

2) Save pages which compel you to take action, but take no action. If a cleverly worded advertisement draws you in, it will draw others to your ad when you are ready to do your own marketing in the future. Build up a library of headlines and within a short time you'll discover they have words and rhythms in common. The secret to success is duplication. After all, there are over 20,000 words in the average dictionary, but only 800 or so are used by most people in ordinary conversations. The most compelling of these words is free, but remember how much money you will generate if your favorite ad word is "free".

3) Never join pre-launch programs. There is a tremendous appeal to the idea of getting in on a "ground floor" opportunity. However, most startups never get off the ground. You will waste your time or your money or both chasing someone else's dream, which sometimes turns out to be pure hype and speculation. Once a program has stood the test of time, at least a year, you'll be able to assess the company's track record. Remember, there will always be more people to market to then opportunities to market. So, where the Internet is concerned, all good opportunities have no time limit or saturation point. The rate people are connecting to the Web is accelerating and is in the tens of thousands per day.

4) Google it. One of the most powerful defenses against being taken advantage of is completely free. If a company or opportunity has been online for any time at all, which is always the case if it has come to your attention, it will have come to the attention of search engines. Companies like Google, Yahoo, and MSN encourage people to report any experiences they have, both good and bad, regarding the pages that they visit and the opportunities they invest in. Just type the name of the site in the search window followed by the word scam. Any reports unfavorable to a business are likely to be listed at the top of the page results.

If you follow these four rules there's a good chance you'll avoid the disappointments which cause an incredibly high percentage of people to leave the Internet business community with a bitter taste in their mouth and a hole in their wallet. We all jump in with the highest of hopes. We also frequently have unrealistic expectations. Any opportunity which claims to offer you the opportunity to retire within one year is looking for your donation to their retirement fund. You must remember everything takes time. Anyone who suggests you can make millions per year by spending a few tens or twenties or within a few months of going online is blowing smoke you know where. Most people are happy if they can retire comfortably after a lifetime of working. Results can occur much more quickly via the net, but don't count on it.

Common sense and persistence will overcome all obstacles to success. Keep your expectations realistic and follow a game plan which makes no ridiculous promises. We all come to the Web with different skills, and it is critical to the process to fairly evaluate your own weaknesses and strengths.
