Know Your Game of Choice

Online poker tables are a lot like the live poker cash games or poker tournaments. This means that if you don’t know your game or games depending on choice, you are sitting at a table with a statistical disadvantage. Do not ever sit down at a poker table, virtual or real, unless you know your game, inside outside and better. If you couldn’t write a book on it, don’t play the game.

Practice Makes Almost Perfect

Remember you will not get better at your game, by sitting idly by. You need to practice the game like it is a way of life. It doesn’t mean you have to play for money, or prizes, if you just play to play, take it serious, and enjoy the game. The more often you do it the better you will become. A professional poker player would be able to accentuate poker is a game of perpetual learning. Even when people think they have mastered a game, they are blind sided by a new choice or a new player.

Become a Poker Book Worm

Take that statement literally, read everything you can get your hands on, guides, books, tips strategies, anything and everything. The more you know about your poker game, the better position you will be in when you sit down at the felt. If it becomes possible, find a player better than you are, and ask them to teach you what they have learned. At the very least watch the stronger players, study what they are doing, take notes mentally or literally. The only other option you have is to learn the hard way, trial by fire at the table. This is often very expensive.

Know Your Opponent

Something that you will never hear enough of, and is vital to any form of poker is knowing whom you are playing. By knowing your opponent, how they play, and the online and off line tells is key to winning online poker, and off. If you know the kind of player you are competing against, you will be able to predict the bluff, the real raise, the fold, a predictable trap, and it becomes a mental duel. Knowing whom you are playing against will give you a huge advantage.

Hold No Hand Attachment

Regardless of how strong you believe your hand is to start, do not get attached to it. The game can be lost with a pocket pair of A’s. If you have thousands invested into the pot, but you believe your hand is bested, get out. It is always better to fold than haphazardly loose your money. If you don’t have it, or don’t believe you will have it, fold it.

Don't Push It
There will be good days and bad days with everything, even poker. If you are facing a series of losing hands, step out and take a break, read a book, and relax instead of handing other people your money. If it appears that you are having ‘one of those days’, then it is a good time to get out of the game, and study up on it instead. If you are hitting a streak of bad days, then study hard before you sit back down, and try to figure out what is lacking in the game.
