The main purpose for horse racing gambling is to take on the “oddsmaker” (or the odds compiler) and win some money. You can either do that as a professional gambler or just for fun to make a certain horse race more thrilling.

Entities that accept bets are called sportsbooks (in the United States) or bookmakers (in the UK). This is applicable to all sports, but it’s your choice of how you want to pursue with your horse betting. You can do it online or offline, in a traditional manner or you can even play the bookmaker if you decide to take your business to Betfair, which is the most important online betting company.

So, in order to start your betting, you need to go to a sportsbook, which can be either online or offline. In the case of Betfair for instance, you can even make a bet over the phone. Betting exchanges like Betfair are just intermediary companies, between bookmakers and people who want to bet. What’s interesting about all this though is that you can get to play the bookmaker yourself, by laying a certain event, which actually means betting that a certain event will not happen.

When you place your bet, you will have to make a selection, meaning that you need to state what you are betting on. Then, you will have to determine the amount of money you are willing to wager. Your selection and your wagering greatly depend on the odds which are being offered on each event, and you will need to become a proficient analyzer of the odds if you want to become a professional gambler.

There are many types of bets that you can make, and many companies also offer combinations of them, so you really have a wide range of possibilities. Among all these, the following seem to be the most popular:

STRAIGHT BET
This is the simplest of all bets. You need to point out a horse which you think is going to win the horse race. If it does, you collect the amount of money proportional to the odds that particular horse had prior to the race.

PLACE
This is when you bet that your selected horse will cross the finish line in any of the first or second positions.

SHOW
This is a winner bet if your favorite horse finishes in any of the top three positions. Of course, given the fact that this possibility is far easier to accomplish than the first and even the second type of bet, the profits will proportionally decrease. This is also referred to as a “safety bet” in the world of horse racing gambling.
