Have you ever been drunk while driving? I hope you haven’t, but if you have, you seriously need to think twice before doing that again. Did you know that 40% of all the drivers are likely to get in an accident involving a drunk driver? They shouldn’t even be called accidents, because they are things which could very easily be prevented.

The average BAC (blood alcohol concentration) a man can have when getting behind the wheel is 0.08, but it can varies throughout the world. There are countries which have zero tolerance (a good thing, in my humble opinion), but there are also countries which don’t even have a law for that. And here are some straight facts that should make all the drinking drivers think seriously about the consequences of their actions.

Is it a big number? I don’t think it’s big, I think it’s enormous. All those people could have been saved if it weren’t for that stubbornness to drink when one knows he/she has to drive. Just think about all the families who suffer the loss of a loved one just because a person can’t hold the liquor.

EVERY DROP OF ALCOHOL DRAMATICALLY INCREASES THE CHANCE OF AN ACCIDENT
Yes, that’s right; with every glass of beer you drink you expose yourself to an ever increasing danger of dying in an accident. How fast those figures raise is almost incredible. After 6 beers you are 40 times more likely to die in an accident than when you are sober, whilst after 8 beers the figure increases to a staggering 380 times.

ON A FRIDAY OR SATURDAY NIGHT, ONE OUT OF TEN DRIVERS IS DRUNK
Yes, we all love the weekends, but this doesn’t mean we have to put other people at risk. So if you are decent driver and drive around on a Friday or Saturday night, as you watch the cars coming out of the opposite direction, do the math. One driver out of ten is drunk at the wheel. It’s no surprise that a big percentage of all the accidents involving driving under the influence happen between 11 PM and 1 AM.

Male drivers are two times more likely to die in this sort of accident than females. As far as the ages which are most susceptible of drunk driving, they are ranged 16-30. From those, persons aged 18-20 represent almost half of the people who have been reported driving drunk. Now, as far as the prevention measures which could be applied, these include:

IMMEDIATE REVOCATION OF THE DRIVING LICENCE
I don’t think this is too harsh, I think this is normal. Being drunk while driving is an impairment, it’s just as serious as having a really poor eyesight. A person who is once caught driving under the influence, should never be allowed to drive again, because there’s a very big probability it will happen again.

LOWER PERMISSIBLE BAC LIMITS
The average permitted BAC limit is 0.08, but it should be lowered. Even zero tolerance could be an option, because, as I said before, a person who drinks, even if he doesn’t reach that 0.08 threshold, is still more likely to produce an accident than sober.

ZERO TOLERANCE FOR TEENAGE DRIVERS
Teenage drunk drivers are the biggest problems, because they are at a very difficult age, age in which they want to show off. Drinking while driving is “cool” for many of them; it’s a story to tell their friends, never realizing what tragedies they can provoke. That’s why this measure should be considered as a very serious option.

Proper campaigns need to be held in order for the unaware public to be educated.
