Chevrolet’s Volt Concept is Turning into Reality…

The electric-powered car - Chevy Volt is all set for a big launch in 2010. On introduction, the Chevrolet Volt will be a compact four-door, four-passenger sedan with a turbocharged, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that will generate 71 horsepower. The engine will start and stop automatically to charge the battery whenever needed.
Unlike other traditional electric cars, the Chevrolet Volt will be an extended-range electric vehicle with a revolutionary propulsion system.
The car is being designed by more than 200 engineers and 50 designers and will run purely on electricity. Chevy Volt will be engineered to carry more than 75 per cent of America’s commuters without using a single drop of fuel. This means those who drive less than 40 miles (64 km) daily will not use any gas and there will be zero emission.
The Chevrolet Volt will retain the concept version’s T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack that includes gasoline and E85 ethanol (in some vehicles) to recharge the battery for above 40-mile range. The battery pack is likely to take up to 10 hours to recharge when plugged into an ordinary 115-volt home outlet and shorter duration if plugged into a 230-volt outlet. Volt will be equipped with a small internal-combustion engine to recharge the batteries at times when an outlet is not nearby for a plug-in recharge.

Production of the Chevrolet Volt will commence from November 2010 and the car is expected to arrive at dealerships in late 2010 or early 2011.
